Wear the Halloween Costume

Yes. That is the topic for this month’s blog post, and we are going to lean into it okay?

For years of my life my hatred of my body dictated my style. I opted for baggy shirts as the insecurity surrounding my stomach topped all fashion statements I might have been interested in.

I felt so uncomfortable in my body that I often tried to just hide away in my clothes in the hopes that no one would look closely and see my body and all the flaws that I saw whenever I looked in the mirror.

Now, let’s turn the clock to the time of year when your outfit is the most important thing. The most talked about at a party, most sought after in terms of theme and style, and arguably the outfit that you put the most amount of thought into. That’s right, Halloween!

For one weekend a year, we obsess over costumes. There are a myriad of ways to go in the costume department. There are sweet, sexy, themed, group, budget, just-thrown together, and many more categories.

For years I put no effort into Halloween costumes because they might have shown my body. And in my mind, that meant that everyone would see my body the way I saw it, as this disgusting and unloveable thing to be ashamed of.

I don’t want you to miss out on the festivity of Halloween because of body insecurity. I want you to have FUN with it and enjoy the party or trick or treating or whatever it might be, without body checking, negative self talk, or insecurity.

So let’s deep dive a bit here:

  1. What costume are you drawn to or interested in wearing?

    1. Maybe think about if you’d like to have a theme, or if you are doing a group costume? Also think about how you want to feel? Do you want to feel empowered? Make a statement? Comfy and silly? Narrow in on that and let that lead.

  2. Once the costume is acquired, try it on prior to the party. Go to the mirror and ask yourself, “how do I look in this?” and “how do I feel in this?”

    1. The answer to both of these should be AMAZING! Even if you don’t feel amazing or you start body checking or you panic about your insecurities, STOP. And instead fill your head with positive comments and words. This might not cure all body woes, but hyping yourself up matters, trust me!

  3. Go to the party or event…and have fun!

    1. A tip - if someone says they like your costume or ask what you are, aim for no negative comebacks. I want you to refrain from, “Oh I am supposed to be XYZ, but you probably couldn’t tell because of how fat I am.” NO NO NO! We will not put ourselves down on Halloween. We will embody the spirit of wearing a costume and have fun. We will accept compliments and we will enjoy our lives in the bodies that we have.
